Todd: OK, Keren, we're talking about health. And, first of all, do you do anything to stay in shape? Like do you exercise or belong to a gym or anything?

Keren: At the moment, I don't belong to a gym but I go jogging. Usually I go jogging four times a week, and I always go in the morning because for me it's the best time to exercise because it keeps me awake all day, but at the moment I don't do any other exercise.

Todd: Wow, just the running.

Keren: Just the running.

Todd: Yeah, well, that's pretty good that you get up and go running in the morning, I have a hard time like running early in the morning.

Keren: Yeah, I think it's easy in the summer because it's really light and the weather's better but in the winter I find it really difficult and actually the last few weeks I've stopped jogging.

Todd: It's OK, I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm in the same boat... OK, so let's change the talk to diet.

Keren: OK.

Todd: Do you have a healthy diet?

Keren: Reasonably healthy. I'm semi-vegetarian so I don't eat meat. I only eat fish and I eat lots of fruit and vegetables, but I also like my junk food and usually once a day I eat either potato chips or cake, so yeah, I have a balanced diet.

Todd: And lastly, do you do anything else to stay healthy? Like for example, do you do yoga or do you meditate or do you get so many hours of sleep night?

Keren: It would be great if I could get eight hours sleep a night but I don't and I don't do yoga. I actually find walking very relaxing and usually when I'm at home in Britain I walk a lot.

Todd: OK, thanks a lot Keren.

Keren: That's OK.

Todd: OK, now Keren, we're talking about staying healthy, and you live overseas, and we both know it's quite hard to actually sometimes stay healthy overseas.

Keren: Yeah.

Todd: First of all, can you talk about Spain? When you lived in Spain was it easy to stay healthy in Spain?

Keren: Actually, it's reasonably easy to stay healthy in Spain. The weather's always good and I like jogging so I always had the opportunity to go jogging outside and there's lots of beautiful areas to go jogging along the river or along the beach so it was relatively easy there.

Todd: And where did you live in Spain?

Keren: I lived in Seville and Barcelona.

Todd: Very nice. OK, now how about Peru? Now you lived in Peru, correct? Where did you live?

Keren: I lived in Lima.

Todd: And was it easy to keep a healthy lifestyle in Peru?

Keren: Well, actually the fruit and vegetables are extremely cheap so, and fruit drinks are really, really popular in Peru. Everybody has their own food processor to make fruit drinks so in terms of food you can stay really, really healthy, really easily. And there's also lots of gyms in Lima actually. Going to the gym is very popular there.

Todd: No way.

Keren: Yeah, yeah.

Todd: Well, what about Japan?

Keren: Japan is kind of the opposite of Peru because I find the fruit and vegetables very, very expensive and so I tend not to buy fruit, only bananas, and I can't believe how expensive the tomatoes cost.

Todd: Right. It is crazy, the prices.

Keren: Yeah, it's incredible, and it rains a lot in Japan, I think so it makes it more difficult to go jogging.

Todd: OK, and just lastly, how about back home in England, is it very easy for you to stay healthy in England?

Keren: I suppose the average English diet is not so healthy. We tend to like our fatty puddings and fatty foods but there's lots of free or cheap places to do exercise. There's many swimming pools and many gyms so, yeah, if you have the right attitude, it's easy to stay healthy there. Yeah.

Todd: OK, well, thanks Keren.

Keren: It's OK.

  1:

C: Hey Jayden, I was wondering if you could do me a favour.

J: That depends. What is it?

C: It's kind of a big favour. I'm absolutely flat broke, and I owe my landlady $200. She's given me until Friday to give it to her, but I don't get paid until next Monday. Do you think you could loan me some cash until I get paid?

J: I'd love to help you out, but I'm a bit short on cash this month as well, I had to get a new engine put into my car, and that ate up my savings.

C: If you can't give me the full amount, a fraction of it would still help. I'll pay you back on Monday. I promise.

J: Let's see, I've got about $50 to get me through the weekend. I can only spare about $20. I would give you more if I had it, I just don't have much moeny to my name right now.

C: Thanks a lot Jayden. Every little bit will help. Tell you what, if you aren't doing anything tonight, why don't you e over and have dinner at my place.

J: That'd be great. Thanks! What time should I e over?

C: How about at 6pm?

J: See you then!

  2:

J: I don't know what I'm going to do! It's going to be impossible to make ends meet if I lose my job!

C: Don't worry. I don't think you're going to lose your job over one mistake.

J: It was a rather big mistake. When you work as an investment adviser, one *** all mistake can cost the pany millions.

C: But it wasn't just you who was involved, right? You were only doing wat your supervisor told you to do.

J: That's true, but my supervisor is very dishonest. There's no reason he needs to tell our boss the truth. I'm sure he will tell our boss that it was all my fault, and there's nothing I can do about that. My boss won't believe me if I tell him the truth.

C: Let's think realistically about what might happen. How much money do you have in your savings?

J: I have enough to live off of for about 3 months. But I really don't want to spend my life savings on just living! I'd rather invest my money somehow.

C: Well, you can't have everything. Let's just figure out what you'll do if you lose your job. When is your contract up on your apartment?

J: Next month. So, I can either move out then or renew my contract for another year.

C: Well, that's good. If you lose your job, you can just move in with me until you find another job. That will save you plenty of money.l

J: That's very generous of you. I guess that would work.

C: If you lose your job, you just have to go for a few months without buying all the junk you usually buy. If you live frugally, you'll save plenty of money.

J: I guess working with so much money has made me rather greedy. Maybe losing my job would be a good thing!

  3:

L: Good morning. How can I help you?

C: I'd like to open a new account.

L: Have you filled out an application form?

C: Yes. And I've brought some documents along with me, too. Do you need to see my passport?

L: Yes. I'll just have my assistant look over these quickly and then we'll move on to the next step. Did you want to open up a checking account and a savings account?

C: Yes. Does the checking account e with a debit card?

L: Yes. Actually, both accounts e with cards that yu can use in ATM machines, so that you won't have to e in to the bank to make a transaction.

C: That's very convenient.

L: It is. Our customers really like it. Do you have any other questions about your new accounts?

C: Yes. What's the maximum amount that you are allowed to have in an overdraft?

L: The maximum is $1000.

C: Is there a penalty for having an overdraft?

L: Yes, but it's not much. You just have to pay 1% interest on the amount. It's much lower rate than any of our loans and it's much better than owing money to most credit cards.

C: That's true. Is everything alright with my documents?

L: They're all in order. If you just sign your name here, you'll receive your cards and pin numbers in the mail in about 3 weeks.

C: Thank you very much.

L: You're wele.

  4:

C: Excuse me; I have a question about transferring money from one account to another.

L: I can help you here. Do you have the account numbers with you?

C: Yes.

L: Are they both under your name?

C: No, this account is my girlfriend's account and that one is mine.

L: Ok, and are you going to put money into your girlfriend's account?

C: Yes. Would it be possible to check my balance first?

L: Not a problem. It llks like you have $450 in your current savings account.

C: Ok, could you transfer $200 into her account then?

L: Would you like to add a narrative?

C: Sure. Could you just typ.

E: Hope this helps with your rent. Love, C.

L: That's very sweet of you. I'm sure she'll appreciate it.

C: I hope she does. I've got rent e next week myself!

L: Well, you know that you can have a $1000 overdraft on this account, right?

C: Yes. Thanks for your help.

L: you're wele.

B: I used to swim all the time, but now I seldom go swimming, maybe once a year if friends with a pool invite me.

A: How about push-ups or aerobics at home? Do you do that sometimes?

B: Every year, I tell myself to start, but I only do it once in a blue moon, when my jeans get too small, maybe every six months. I use a hula hoop.

A: How about housework? That’s good exercise, too.

B: I clean my house now and then, maybe once a month!

Vocabulary

1. troublesome:

2. adverbs of frequency:

4. push-up: 俯卧撑。

5. aerobics:

6. hula hoop:

Usage Tips

1. 在本对话中,有很多表示“时间频率”的词,如文中出现的once in a while, now and then, occasionally, 它们的时间频率都比sometimes(有时)这个词要低一些。 I haven’t seen you in a blue moon.(我很久都没看见你了。)

I usually eat breakfast fast, but on Sundays I have a leisurely breakfast. 形容词brisk的副词是briskly,是“轻快的,敏捷的”之意,如:a brisk walk(轻快的步伐),a brisk wave(轻快的挥手),a brisk hello (轻快的打招呼);在用该词形容风时,则是指“凛冽的”.,如:a brisk breeze(疾风)。
